Roadtrip to Bedford for a good cause
I was invited by Gumtree to join a team of designers, bloggers and upcyclers at Max McMurdo’s workshop in Bedford this Saturday taking part in #Beetlemania. The aim of the project was to transform an old VW Beetle that was fit for the scrap yard into furniture to raise money for charity.
The ‘U-TEAM’ had already been working hard to de-construct the yellow beetle throughout the week, so I was there as a helping hand on Saturday to assist with painting and sanding along with fellow bloggers from around the UK. It was a fun day and I met lots of lovely people, as well as catch up with some that I met at the first ever #UpcycleRevolution event! See below for a few sneaky images of some of the half finished items.
The aim of this project is to raise as much money as possible for ‘The Butterfly Tree‘ charity which supports rural communities in Zambia where there is currently a huge HIV and aids pandemic. More than 34 million people have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. I met Jane (the founder) on Saturday and it was very inspirational to hear about the difference her charity is making. The plan is to build a new classroom for the orphans which will cost around £20,000. Fingers crossed #Beetlemania will raise a decent amount of money to help speed up the build!
All of the furniture creations will be sold on Gumtree very soon with every penny going to ‘The Butterfly Tree‘. Even better, Gumtree have kindly said they will match whatever is raised.
So to all my friends, family, readers, car lovers, upcyclers, clients and anyone interested in upcycling – please spread the word and have a look on Gumtree’s website for all the finished masterpieces where they will be up for sale!
